Courts Step In As Power Brokers In Drawing Congressional Maps


Across the country, courts are stepping in as increasingly influential power brokers and even map drawers as deadlines to release redistricting plans approach.

According to reporting by Politico, 120 congressional seats hang in the balance of state Supreme Courts.

Without federal legislation, judges, some of whom are elected and some of whom are appointed by partisan governors, hold an outsized amount of power.

Michael Li, senior counsel for the Democracy Program at the Brennan Center for Justice, joins Charles Blow on β€œPrime” to discuss what precedent is set by courts effectively drawing state congressional maps.
