Data From Civil Rights Project at UCLA Shows NY Schools Still Segregated

New data confirms an ongoing problem in the racial makeup of the nation’s largest school system. In 2014, the Civil Rights Project at UCLA reported that New York state was the most segregated state in the nation for Black students. About seven years later, they’ve found the problem persists. The group has just released updated data found in 2018, about 85% of Black students in New York attended what the study calls โ€œintensely segregated, predominantly non-white schools compared with about 1% of white students.โ€ The co-director of the Civil Rights Project at UCLA, Gary Orfield, joins “Prime with Charles Blow” to discuss the findings from the research.ย ย
