Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Founded on Jan. 13, 1913

On this day in 1913, 22 Black women formed the Delta Sigma Theta sorority.

With women’s suffrage and welfare at its core, they emphasized academic excellence, social activism, equality and service.

Prominent members of the organization include β€œMaking the Case” host Yodit Tewolde, Roberta Flack, civil rights activist Barbara Jordan, Shirley Chisholm and Dr. Dorothy Irene Height.

Delta’s 10th national president was one of the only Black women on stage during 1963’s historic March on Washington. Height also served as president of the National Council of Negro Women for 40 years.

All this and more on β€œPrime.”
