Democrats, Republicans set to debate voting rights legislation on Capitol Hill

Abolishing the filibuster may prove to be the only way sweeping election reforms and protecting the right to vote can get through Congress. BNC Correspondent Bofta Yimam joined “Start Your Day” with Sharon Reed and Mike Hill to discuss what’s happening on Capitol Hill. A hearing being held Thursday is called “Oversight of the Voting Rights Act” and it will address the evolving landscape of voting discrimination. This hearing comes after an uproar over Georgia’s restrictive voting law often called Jim Crow 2.0. Democrats are working to gain steam for federal voting laws under the “For the People Act.” The bill sits in the Senate and faces an uphill battle. The hearing will likely be a heated debate as Democrats say fighting voter suppression is at the heart of the matter and Republicans say it is about election security.
