Dr. Bernard Ashby talks rising COVID-19 cases, vaccine hesitancy

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, half of all adults older than 1 in the United States have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. The agency also reported that a quarter of Americans are fully vaccinated, but cases are averaging at 70,000 a day in the United States. Dr. Bernarnd Ashby, a cardiologist and Florida state lead for the Committee to Protect Medicare, joined “Start Your Day” with Sharon Reed and Mike Hill to discuss the ongoing pandemic. Ashby said the variant first identified in the United Kingdom is the most dominant variant in the United States. “That variant is more transmissible and we have data that shows it is more lethal,” he said. Citing the news of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine causing a rare blood clotting disorder in six women, Ashby said vaccine hesitancy is a huge concern and that the response was an “overreaction.”
