Dr. Charles Modlin talks racial disparities in healthcare

“Start Your Day” features numerous medical segments to help viewers understand that health is important. There are disparities in how Black and brown patients are treated and that information is supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Dr. Charles Modlin, a kidney transplant surgeon, urologist and national physician leader, joined the show with Sharon Reed and Mike Hill to discuss racial disparities in healthcare. He said the healthcare disparities are higher incidents of disease or burden of disease in certain segments of the population. Citing these disparities, Modlin said there are multiple contributing factors, including lack of access to healthy foods and nutrition education and a lack of cultural understanding from doctors. He said there are unconscious and implicit biases to how healthcare providers treat people of color.
