Educators Facing Political Challenges to Teach Students Amid Pandemic

Welcome to β€œPrime” hosted by Charles Blow.

Coming up, the 2021-22 school year could be one of the most politicized ever. America’s classrooms have turned into battlegrounds for debates over the COVID-19 pandemic and racism.

States like California have decided to follow the CDC’s recommendation by requiring students, teachers and visitors to always wear masks when indoors at a public school. However, states like Florida and Texas have enacted laws or issued executive orders prohibiting school districts from requiring masks in public schools.

As it relates to critical race theory, states like Tennessee have restricted or banned education on racism, bias and the contributions of specific racial or ethnic groups to U.S. history.

Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, joins Blow on β€œPrime” to discuss the current climate in education.

All this and more on β€œPrime.”
