Engineer Elijah J. McCoy Was Responsible for 57 Patents


Engineer Elijah J. McCoy was responsible for 57 patents.

At age 15, he went to Scotland for an apprenticeship in mechanical engineering and returned home to Michigan, a certified mechanical engineer.

The majority of McCoy’s inventions were related to lubrication systems as he also developed designs for an ironing board, a lawn sprinkler and other machines.

He typically assigned his patent rights to his employers or sold them to investors. But in 1920, McCoy formed the Elijah McCoy Manufacturing Company to produce lubricators bearing his name.
