First Documented Recognition of Africans in America in 1619


On this day in 1619, the first enslaved Africans, who were carried on Dutch ships to Jamestown in the colony of Virginia, were recorded.

In June of that year, the House of Burgesses met in Jamestown as they laid the foundation for the representative democracy America is today. Their disregard for the interests of other settlers led to an uprising of farmers, indentured servants and former enslaved people.

As a result, the leaders of Jamestown created laws for most vulnerable of the group, enslaved people from Africa. The first legal sanction of lifelong slavery in the colonies came in 1640 and by 1705, slavery laws were made into law.
