Former Officers in Floyd Case Face Federal Charges for Violating his Civil Rights

On Friday, the four former Minneapolis police officers involved in the murder of George Floyd have been indicted on US civil rights charges. A federal grand jury accused the officers of violating Floyd’s constitutional rights while he was restrained and face down on the pavement. BNC Legal Expert Candace Kelley joined “Start Your Day” with Sharon Reed and Mike Hill to discuss how these new charges could impact Derek Chauvin’s appeal in the criminal case. Kelley said the indictment says Chauvin is specifically responsible for putting his knee on Floyd’s neck. She also said the charges for all four officers is for not rendering medical assistance. “All four officers are being charged for doing nothing,” she said. Chauvin was also indicted on charges for an incident in 2017 where he kneeled on a teen’s neck for 17 minutes.
