The 16th Street Baptist Church was one of the civil rights movementβs well-known hubs in Birmingham, Alabama.
On Sept. 15, 1963, a bomb exploded just before Sunday morning service and left 16th Street Baptist Church in shambles. Four young Black girls were killed in that horrific attack.
Their deaths, along with the violent clashes that erupted in the streets, garnered national and worldwide attention to Birmingham, and marked a turning point in the movement. The attack was proven to have been perpetrated by members of the Ku Klux Klan, but they would not be brought to justice for at least another decade.
