HBCUs Are Seeing Record Increase in Enrollment Post-COVID Lockdown

Historically Black Colleges and Universities found themselves walking a thin line between success and failure amid COVID-19.

One third of HCBUs are now seeing an increase in enrollment and applications, but retention is key. They’re now focusing on trying to provide students with as many resources as they can to keep them on board, including opting for continued remote or hybrid learning. β€œFor the first time in this country, we’ve got not only a vice president who graduated from HBCU, but we have a president who graduated from the state school,” Ravi Perry, Howard University’s political science chair, told BNC’s Tashanea Whitlow. β€œWe finally have some representation at the highest level of federal government that says β€˜Yes, these are schools where you can go get the best education in the world and go on to change the world.’”
