A new report by the CDC revealed Black women are three to four times more likely than white women to die in childbirth. Sixty percent of those deaths are preventable, according to the report. Kimberly Seals Allers, the creator of the IRTH app, joined Start Your Day with Sharon Reed and Mike Hill to discuss how this outcome can be changed. The app is a place where Black and brown women can find prenatal, birthing, postpartum and pediatric reviews of care. “For us to get to the root of the issue, we really have to start talking about racism in medical care and the ways Black and brown birthing bodies are treated differently,” Allers said. Citing the history of the obstetrician-gynecology field, she said it was about using Black women for experimentation. “So, this system began by dehumanizing Black women and unfortunately, that tide has not necessarily turned,” she said.
