Henrietta Lacks’ Estate Sues Pharma Company for Profiting off Her Stolen Cells

Charles Blow talks about Henrietta Lacks’ estate suing pharmaceutical company Thermo Fisher Scientific on the 70th anniversary of her death, claiming it profited from her stolen cells.
“Henrietta Lacks was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cervical cancer in 1951. While she was receiving treatment, in a segregated hospital ward, doctors at Johns Hopkins took a tissue sample from the tumor in her cervix without her consent, just months before she would pass away. What they found was that while most cells died after being removed from a patient’s body, hers survived in laboratories,” Blow tells the “Prime” audience.
Benjamin Crump, civil rights lawyer representing Henrietta Lacks’s estate, joins the show to talk about the lawsuit.
