Hip-Hop Was Born on This Day in 1973 and Turned Into a Cultural Movement

On this day in Black history, hip-hop music was born in 1973 at a back-to-school jam hosted by Cindy Campbell and her brother, legendary DJ Kool Herc in the Bronx, New York.

Since then, hip-hop has grown into one of the most influential music genres of all time. The background of hip-hop goes into the daily lives of African Americans, as they face racial discrimination and injustice. The genre took off from the 1990s and according to Spotify, it was the most listened to genre in the world in 2015.

As a result, the U.S. Senate passed a bill to recognize Aug. 11 as β€œHip-Hop Celebration Day.”

All this and more on β€œPrime.”
