Historians Believe Story of ‘Lone Ranger’ Was Inspired by Former Slave

Some historians even believe that Bass Reeves, a Black man born into slavery, was the inspiration for the legendary “Lone Ranger.”

“The Harder They Fall” is the latest in a string of films telling the forgotten story of Black people in the Wild West.

With the movie, a Black director uses a star-studded, all-Black cast to tell a Western story of loyalty, love and revenge. The film’s uniqueness comes from its bold defiance to conventional accounts of the Old West.

Historians estimate that a quarter of cowboys in the west were Black, as these men had mostly either been enslaved by ranchers or were freed men who went west in search of opportunity.

All this and more on “Prime.”
