Day six of the jury selection process in the Derek Chauvin trial continues. Seven jurors have been seated, and seven more are needed before the trial begins on March 29. On the same day, the seventh juror was placed for the criminal trial, the Minneapolis City Council unanimously voted to award George Floyd’s family $27 million in a settlement. In July 2020, Floyd’s family filed a federal lawsuit against the city, Derek Chauvin, and the other three officers involved in his death seeking compensation and special damages. BNC Legal Correspondent Candace Kelley joined Start Your Day with Sharon Reed and Mike Hill to discuss the settlement and how it may impact the remainder of the trial. She says she is surprised that the settlement was announced in the middle of the jury selection process.
