Gymnast Simone Biles is Time magazine’s Athlete of the Year.
With a combined 32 Olympic and world medals, Biles is undoubtedly a great athlete. However, the award is for her courage off of the gymnastics team.
Time magazine awarded Biles for her brave decision to withdraw from events at the Tokyo Olympics after five long years of training, to focus on her mental health.
Weeks later, the 24-year-old testified before the Senate about being sexually abused by former U.S. gymnastics Dr. Larry Nassar.
