When Jessica Watkins makes her debut space flight in April 2022, it will be one for the history books.
NASA announced earlier this week that the Stanford graduate will make the trek to its orbiting outpost, making her the first Black woman on the International Space Station crew.
Watkins will also become the first Black woman with an extended stay. She will fly to the space station in April of 2022 alongside three of her peers. The crew will journey from Kennedy Space Center aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.
Once at the station, the astronauts will spend six months in the ISS microgravity laboratory conducting scientific research, according to NASA.
