The Olympics is the world’s biggest sports stage. And the International Olympic Committee wants the focus to remain on the games, not politics.
Even though Olympic Charter Rule 50 prohibits any athlete protest or political demonstration on the field-of-play or medal ceremony podium,18-year-old Luciana Alvarado may have found a loophole in IOC’s protest rule.
At the 1968 Olympic Games, John Carlos and Tommie Smith were punished for the same gesture, Alvarado ended her routine with a fist in the air.
Carlos joined Roland on #RolandMartinUnfiltered to discuss how politics is still in play at the Olympics despite the IOC’s ban on protests. During their chat the former Olympian explained the harsh reality Black Olympic athletes face and what they should do in response.
