Lisa Holder White is the first black woman Justice on the Illinois Supreme Court.
White, sworn in Thursday, will replace Justice Rita Garman, the state’s longest-serving Supreme Court Justice.
White’s appointment comes just a week after Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson was the first Black woman appointed to the United States Supreme Court.
Before being appointed to Illinois Supreme Court, White became the first Black Judge in the Sixth Judicial Circuit in 2001.
She was also the first Black Justice in the Illinois Appellate Court, the fourth district, in 2013.
Holder White will hold the seat until December 2024. She plans to then run for a 10-year term during the November election.
