Juneteenth Becomes Second Federal Holiday Relating to Black Americans

President Joe Biden signed into law the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act, making June 19 a federal holiday recognizing and commemorating emancipation. The law makes Juneteenth the second federal holiday related to the history of Black Americans since Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 1983. While Juneteenth has been celebrated for decades by communities on the local level, primarily through churches and civic organizations, the holiday had not been widely known. Marcia Chatelain, a professor of History and African American Studies at Georgetown University, joins “Prime with Charles Blow” to discuss Juneteenth.
