Kids Become Orphans at Alarming Rate As COVID-19 Claims Parents’ Lives

More than 800,000 people have died of COVID-19 in the U.S. alone, but the lives lost are not the only ones impacted.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, over 120,000 children in the U.S. have lost at least one parent to the coronavirus, and over 22,000 have lost a caregiver or grandparent.

This is significant given that over 4.5 million children rely on grandparents as guardians or providers of their housing. For every white child who became orphaned due to COVID-19, 2.4 Black children have suffered the same fate.

Dr. Jeffrey Gardere, psychologist, joins Charles Blow on “Prime” to discuss the psychological impact that this may have on children.

All this and more on “Prime.”
