Legislators discuss COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act, plan to combat rise in hate

Senate leaders could come together on a bill that would investigate hate crimes against the Asian American community amid the pandemic. BNC Washington D.C. Correspondent Bofta Yimam joined “Start Your Day” with Sharon Reed and Mike Hill to discuss the plans from both sides of the aisle. The COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act was introduced in March after the mass shooting at three Atlanta-area spas. Since then, other incidents, including an attack on a 65-year-old woman in New York captured on surveillance video, have increased pressure on Congress to take action. Democratic sponsors of the bill stress the connection between the pandemic and the spike in hate crimes against the AAPI community. The bill would appoint a Justice Department official to expedite reviews of hate crimes and provide guidance to local law enforcement on online reporting of hate crimes. Some Republicans are advocating for a bill that would encompass all hate crimes and streamline federal response.
