Violent crimes are dropping in Baltimore, Maryland and it’s due to an initiative started during the pandemic. The city stopped prosecuting low-level crimes to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Jail populations and crimes in many categories dropped and now this initiative in policing is permanent. Marilyn Mosby, the woman behind the initiative, joined “Start Your Day” with Sharon Reed and Mike Hill to discuss the experiment. Mosby serves as the State’s Attorney for Baltimore and she testified before a House panel about how the country’s failed war on drugs impacted the city of Baltimore. “Rather than treat drug use as the public health crisis that it is, for decades, we have stigmatized and criminalized Black people for what should be a public health issue,” she said. Citing the success of the program, she said defaulting to criminalizing poor Black and brown people is counterproductive.
