Marshall Project Writer Maurice Chamma Discusses Heat-Related Deaths Among Prisoners


Many states are experiencing record highs during the nationwide heatwave that seriously threatens the health and safety of vulnerable people, such as children and the elderly. However, the most vulnerable are those in prison due to certain psychotropic medications they are taking, reacting badly to heat.

โ€œMaking the Case with Yoditโ€explores this issue with author and Marshall Project staff writer, Maurice Chamma, who covers this issue in his book โ€œCooking Them to Death: The Lethal Toll of Hot Prisons.โ€ According to Chamma, it is uncertain the actual amount deaths due to poor record-keeping and limited access to autopsy, but in some states what is known is that at least 20 prisoners have died due to heat since 1998.
