Minister and social justice advocate Luther Young Jr. spoke with BNC about his take on the historic hurdles preventing the LGBTQ+ community from having a bigger place in the church.
“The Black church has been instrumental in advancing social justice and civil rights”, Young says. “However, we have not seen as big of an uptake when it comes to LGBTQ+ inclusion.” Young mentions how a lot of that has to do with the relationship of gender and sexuality throughout the history of Black people. Young also touches on the history of sexual violence and being accepted by the dominant society.
