Miriam Benjamin: Inventor of the Gong and Signal Chair

Miriam Benjamin was the forward-thinking creator of the revolutionary Gong and Signal Chair.

In 1888, she applied and received a patent for her invention which as the name suggests included a chair equipped with a small electric apparatus.

Hotel customers could signal for service or help by pressing a button attached to the chair, which would cause a light feature on the structure to illuminate. This simple yet brilliant device helped hotels manage their staff and enhanced the overall guest experience.

The Gong and Signal Chair was so popular that it was adapted for use by the U.S. House of Representatives.
