MLB: 2021 is first season Negro Leagues recognized as 'Major'

A sure sign of spring is opening day in Major League Baseball. 2021 marks the first time baseball’s Negro Leagues will get formal recognition. In December, about 150 years after the leagues started, the MLB finally recognized the Negro Leagues as Major Leagues. One of the men responsible for getting the recognition established is Larry Lester, the co-founder of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City. He is also the president and chief executive officer of Noir Tech Research. Lester joined Start Your Day with Sharon Reed and Mike Hill to talk about his research and love for baseball. Lester said many Black players did not get the respect, recognition and opportunities they deserved due to the color of their skin. “We bought more energy to the game. We maximized the rules,” he said. Lester hopes more Black children will learn the history of Black players and get involved in the sport.
