New York Attorney General Letitia James unveiled sweeping new legislation targeting excessive use of force by police.
The new bill is called the Police Accountability Act and James says it would be the most far-reaching police use-of-force reform in the nation. The legislation would seek criminal penalties for officers who use force in circumstances that are “grossly excess of what is warranted under the circumstances” and where the use of force causes injury or death.
Retired Los Angeles Police Sergeant Cheryl Dorsey joins Charles Blow to discuss James’ bill. Dorsey says if the bill passes, police will have to explain every action they take that is identified as excessive making it a battle of perception.
Activist Deray Mckesson later joins the conversation saying the bill is “more symbol than substance.”ย ย
