New York City Opens Supervised Drug Injection Sites for Drug Users

More Americans died of drug overdoses this past year than any year on record, the CDC reported earlier this month.

The crisis is particularly severe in New York City, where it’s estimated one person dies every four hours of an overdose, according to the city’s health commissioner.

The city authorized the country’s first supervised drug injection sites. Starting on Nov. 30, two sites in East Harlem and Washington Heights can offer services the city health department believes could save up to 130 lives a year.
