Remembering Bobby Rush, a Legend in Chicago Politics

Bobby Rush announced that at his term’s end he will be retiring from politics after more than 30 years of service.

He gathered with his family and constituents in the same Southside church where Emmett Till’s funeral took place to deliver the news.

The 75-year-old Democrat from Illinois was first elected to Congress in 1992. A minister, social activist and co-founder of the Illinois Black Panther Party, Rush is beloved in his hometown of Chicago and around the country.

Rush is the 24th Democrat to announce that he will not be running this year, as compared to 11 Republicans who have said the same.
