Legendary actor and civil rights activist Sidney Poitier died at the age of 94.
He broke barriers en route to fame by transforming how Black people were portrayed in film, masterfully exemplifying the fullness and scope of Blackness.
In 1967, Poitier would become Hollywood’s leading earner, but as an exemplar of the artist-activist model he risked his career at the height of his celebrity to advocate for equality.
For his lifetime of achievement, he was given an honorary Oscar in 2002, the same year Denzel Washington captured the award.
