The Justice Department has filed a lawsuit against the state of Texas over the state’s six-week abortion ban.
The lawsuit was filed at the federal court in Austin, and it challenges the constitutionality of the abortion ban because the law conflicts with “the statutory and constitutional responsibilities of the federal government.”
Texas Governor Greg Abbott has taken the first step in shifting his focus from voter suppression to gerrymandering. The creation of more heavily red-leaning districts would enable Texas Republicans to hold the state house majority for the next decade and beyond. However, the state is experiencing a population transformation and is threatening the stronghold Republicans currently have on the Texas statehouse.
