Robert Patillo II talks gentrification of the Civil Rights Movement on Start Your Day

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy continues to grow as more information about him becomes available. Robert Patillo II, the Executive Director of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, joined Start Your Day with Sharon Reed and Mike Hill. The Rainbow PUSH Coalition comes from the Southern Christian Leadership Conference’s Operation Breadbasket. The initiative was founded by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and sought to combine theology and social justice to effect progressive change in America. Jesse Jackson Sr. served as the first director in 1966. The Rainbow PUSH Coalition came from a merger between Operation PUSH (People United to Save Humanity) and the Rainbow Coalition. Patillo said organizations like this are important because the stories of the Civil Rights Movement have become gentrified and it is important to take the history back.
