In Texas, Juneteenth has been a state holiday since 1979. On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers brought the news of freedom to enslaved Black people in Galveston, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Today in Galveston, a new 5,000 square foot mural is the focus of downtown celebrations. Galveston is just one of several cities with big celebrations planned for the weekend. In Atlanta, the BNC team joined an early block party in the historic Castleberry Hill neighborhood. The significance hit home in that community, which has the largest concentration of Black-owned businesses in the nation. Roland Martin joins “Making the Case w/Yodit” from the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in Washington D.C. to discuss the Juneteenth holiday.ย ย
