Shannon LaNier Discusses Complicated Family History and Thomas Jefferson

Thomas Jefferson is remembered every Independence Day for being a part of Constitution and writing “All Men are created equal,” however Jefferson owned more than 600 slaves. Joining “Start Your Day” is the sixth grandson of Jefferson, Shannon LaNier, to talk about his family history.

LaNier never had to really research his family history because he grew up always knowing that he was related to Jefferson. Growing up, no one really believe he was a descendant of Thomas Jefferson, until his mother came to his school and verified LaNier’s story.

LaNier talks about having mixed feelings toward Thomas Jefferson because on one hand, he wrote those famous words about everyone being “Equal” but on the other hand, Jefferson didn’t really do anything to free the 600 slaves he owned. LaNier says, “He could have done more. And for that he really missed the mark and he is a coward.”

All this and more on “Start Your Day.”
