On Thursday, the Grandmother of Juneteenth, Ms. Opal Lee held a press conference at the National Press Club in Washington, DC to embolden Congress to re-introduce legislation that would recognize June 19 as a national holiday.
47 states currently commemorate the ending of slavery with a day of observance and 1.5 million people have signed Ms. Opal’s petition on Change.org agreeing the day should be a nationally recognized holiday.
The 94-year-old Fort Worth, Texas native says the time is now to get on the road to unity and make Juneteenth a federal holiday, so we can start healing the heart and soul of our nation.
Ms. Opal Lee spoke with Roland Martin about the push to make Juneteenth a national holiday in America.
