βPrimeβ host Charles Blow had a chance to speak Rep. Al Green about redistricting and the future of voting in Texas following changes in the Senate.
The Texas state Senate has approved a new congressional map that would significantly dilute the Black and Brown vote, adding two districts where white voters make up the majority. The number of districts where Hispanic voters make up the majority would be reduced from eight to seven, and there would be zero districts where Black voters are the majority.
Redistricting also created fewer districts where voters lean towards the Democratic Party. Reps. Green and Sheila Jackson Lee, two of the most tenured House members from the Lone Star State, will be moved into the same district. They both testified against the changes, but the Senate was not swayed.
