That's A Lawsuit: Sheriffs Sued For Excessive Force After Slamming Car Door On Stephon Hopkins' Head

A sheriff’s office in Greenville County, South Carolina and two of its sheriffs are facing a lawsuit after a Black man claims the deputies used excessive force during his arrest.

The incident, which was recorded on video back in April 2019, shows a handcuffed Stephon Hopkins being pulled from the back of a patrol car and violently thrown to the ground. Then, a deputy shuts the door on Hopkins’ head.

Hopkins was arrested after deputies responded to two 911 calls. Officers said Hopkins refused to answer questions when he was approached and after a foot chase, Hopkins was tased and wrestled to the ground. The suit claims, the deputy admitted to punching Hopkins in the face before handcuffing him. After an internal review, the sheriff’s office determined that the deputy acted properly and did not use excessive force.
