Lynchings in America are a symbol of horror.
It was used to punish and instill fear in both enslaved and free Black people for minor infractions. According to the Equal Justice Initiative, more than 4,000 Black people were lynched in America between 1877 and 1950. Mississippi has the highest recorded lynchings in America, with 581.
Unfortunately, there have been numerous amounts of Black people found hanging from trees in various states that were deemed suicides. In many of these cases, the families have vehemently fought the authority’s suicide ruling, but their concerns have often been dismissed.
Tafeni English, director of the Civil Rights Memorial Center at the Southern Poverty Law Center, joins Charles Blow on βPrimeβ to discuss the dismissive nature of these investigations and present-day lynchings.
