Four Seattle police officers who participated in the Jan. 6 insurrections are asking the Washington Supreme Court to prevent the release of their identities.
The attorney representing the officers’ attorneys say cops had a First Amendment right to attend a political rally, and releasing their names could subject them to potential violence and harassment.
However, the ACLU, who filed a public records act request for the city’s Office of Police Accountability investigation into the officer’s activities on Jan. 6, believes the public has a right to know who the officers are.
The case will decide if their anonymity is protected under the state’s public records law.
The court must also decide whether the officers can continue their court filings anonymously.
The case was taken under advisement by the high court and will be ruled upon later.
