'Word In Black': 10 Black-Owned Newspapers Unite To Frame The Narrative About The Black Experience

Ten black-owned newspapers are partnering up to create a new platform dedicated to representing the black experience.

The platform is called Word in black. The purpose of the outlet is to amplify the Black experience by reporting, collecting, and sharing stories about real people in communities across the country.

From WordInBlack.com:
“Word In Black promises to confront inequities, elevate solutions and amplify the Black experience by reporting, collecting and sharing stories about real people in communities across our country. We believe that by joining forces and providing a platform to examine these experiences in one place, we can shape how the nation understands and addresses systemic issues of race, justice and equity. It is through collective understanding that we bring about collective impact.

We have a bold vision–to be the most trusted news and information source for, about and by Black people. However, we invite everyone invested in Black people’s futures β€” whether you’re Black or not β€” to join us on this journey and make this work possible.”

On Wednesday, Sonceria Messiah-Jiles, CEO, Houston Defender, and Denise Barnes, Publisher, Washington Informer spoke with Roland Martin about the “Word In Black” and about how traditional / “legacy” Black media is adapting their strategies to reach Black America with new and evolving technologies.
