Cobalt Metal in Electric Cars Mined Under Unsafe Conditions in Congo

More than half a trillion dollars from President Biden’s Build Back Better spending bill will go towards renewable energy and manufacturing electric vehicles.

The key metal used to make electric batteries, cobalt, has largely been found in Congo. Last year the country generated 70% of the world’s cobalt for electric vehicle manufacturers like Tesla and Volkswagen.

According to a New York Times report, the search for cobalt has rapidly transformed the metal into the world’s newest “blood diamond.”

New York Times reporter Eric Lipton joins Charles Blow on “Prime” to discuss this story.
