On May 25, 2020, Derek Chauvin kneeled on George Floyd’s neck resulting in his death. On June 25, 2021, he was sentenced to 22.5 years for the murder.
After the sentencing by Judge Peter Cahill, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison and prosecutors in the case held a press conference. He says Derek Chauvin has impacted the reputation of police officers. “When there’s no trust, sadly, there’s little safety,” he says. He also urges Congress to pass the George Floyd Justice and Policing Act.”I call on leaders and members of Congress to pass the best and strongest version of this bill that can be passed, and to pass it now,” he says.
